Best Beauty Secrets from Around the World

I am a huge fan of traditional beauty secrets. There is something to be said about beauty tips that transcend the passage of time and are passed down from one generation to the next. Join me on this (written) journey as I discover the best beauty secrets from around the world.
1. Brazil: Oatmeal to heal sunburn
Brazil is renowned for its sun and beach tourism. It stands to reason, then, that they have a secret natural ingredient to combat the harrowing effects of too much exposure to the sun. Well, that secret ingredient is oatmeal. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, Brazilians use oats to soothe the pain of a sunburn and to speed up the healing process of sunburnt skin.
2. Croatia: Nettles to tackle itchy scalp
If you suffer from dandruff or dry and itchy scalp, this tip from Croatia may be your answer. Croatians often gather nettles, boil them in water, and, then, use that water to wash their hair in lieu of using shampoo. They swear that nettles help to cleanse your hair and scalp naturally, stimulate hair follicles, as well as promote hair growth. Besides that, as nettles are high in iron, potassium, magnesium, and calcium, they are an excellent natural astringent and are great at stimulating circulation.
3. China and Japan: Rice water to wash face and body
This is not a beauty tip that is exclusive to only China and Japan, though it originated from these countries. In fact, my very own Malaysian mother often raves about rice water and how supple and soft my skin will be upon frequent use. And, she is not wrong. Rice is chock full of antioxidants and nutrients which help to not only remove dirt and grime but, also, to promote softer skin and fight harmful free radicals that lead to wrinkles and aging. Additionally, because it is a natural product, there are no nasty chemicals in it—unlike some store-bought skin care products that are loaded with all sort of awful chemicals.
4. India: Virgin coconut oil for shiny and glorious locks
Now, I know I have constantly waxed lyrical about virgin coconut oil but I (and many others) simply cannot get over how amazing virgin coconut oil is. The ladies (and gents) in India use this as a natural conditioner to tame pesky flyaways and to hydrate their hair. The virgin coconut oil will moisturise each strand and lock the moisture in for shiny and healthy hair. Besides that, the nutrients in virgin coconut oil promote circulation in the scalp and help to encourage faster hair growth.
5. Egypt: Bathe in milk and honey for enviable skin
The legend says that this little beauty secret dates all the way back to Cleopatra’s era. In pursuit of healthy glowing skin, the literal queen bathed in milk and honey. The alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) in milk help to slough off dead skin cells, exfoliate and nourish the skin. Besides that, honey is also loaded with antioxidants to rebuild new tissues for a youthful complexion. Queen Cleo definitely was ahead of her time and on to something with her luxurious milk and honey bath.
Now, if you will excuse me, I am off to wash my face with some rice water, deep condition my hair with virgin coconut oil, and take a bath of milk and honey.
